Press Release: THE BONNY GENTLEMEN’S LEAGUE (THE LEAGUE) CONDEMNS THE FINIMAVIOLENT INCIDENT OF AUGUST 22, 2026
Statement of Condemnation
The Bonny Gentlemen’s League strongly condemns the tragic incident that occurred on Saturday, August 22, 2026, in Finima, Bonny Local Government Area of Rivers State, Nigeria. The violence was not only shocking, but lamentable, and deeply sorrowful. It disrupted the spirit of Fongu-Mini, a cherished period of rest, celebration, and camaraderie, when fishermen return home because of unfavourable weather and tides, and the community comes together in fellowship and brotherhood.

Impact on Peace and Unity
The League views the attack as a serious assault on the peace and unity of the people of Finima Community in particular and Bonny Kingdom in general. Such violence risks reviving painful tensions that had already been resolved.
The League therefore calls on all parties to sheath their swords and embrace dialogue, recognizing that families in Finima are interconnected by marriage, blood, and kinship. Violence only thrives when external miscreants are invited to sow division and chaos among brothers.
Commendation and Call for Action
The League appreciates the intervention of the Chairman of Bonny Local Government Area, Amasenibo Abinye Blessing Pepple, whose action helped to prevent further escalation and possible catastrophe. We however call for more proactive measures to prevent the occurrence of similar incidents in the future.
We commend the security agencies for their intervention and urge them to be more proactive and vigilant in nipping such incidents in the bud. We further call for an unbiased and impartial investigation to ensure that justice is served for all concerned.
Appeal to Traditional Leadership and All Parties
The League implores the leadership of the Bonny Kingdom Traditional Institution, as fathers of the land, to explore genuine and dispassionate ways of establishing lasting peace between the warring parties.
Finally, we appeal to all parties involved in the Finima conflict to come together at a round table for dialogue, reconciliation, and the restoration of total peace in Finima in particular, and Bonny Kingdom at large.
Genuine peace can only be achieved when brotherly love is embraced.
