Reports indicate an escalating flooding crisis in Rivers State, particularly affecting areas like Ahoada/East, Ahoada-West, Andoni, and Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni Local Government Areas, and numerous parts of Port Harcourt as the rainy season intensifies.

Checks by Kristina Reports indicate that the primary causes identified include inadequate drainage systems, improper waste disposal by residents, tidal impacts, abandonment of government-owned properties, and intensified rainfall patterns attributed to climate change.

Further checks by Kristina Reports show that the recent heavy rains have highlighted the vulnerability of Port Harcourt, with notable landmarks such as the Pan African building, Port Harcourt Mall, and Artillery Flyover inundated.

The aftermath has resulted in the displacement of businesses and facilities, severely hampering the movement of traders, hawkers, students, and other residents.

Moreover, the flooding has contributed to traffic congestion and accidents, prompting widespread concern among citizens.

Expressing dismay, a resident named Dimkpa Saviour emphasized the urgent need for government intervention to prevent future flooding incidents, stressing the importance of effective waste management by residents.

“The causes of this flooding is not just that the government isn’t working but our fellow humans, once rain falls, they throw their dirty into the gutter, so tell our people, let them. Keep their wastes well and dispose it well and the government should also do something about it”.

Another concerned individual, Arianna Sunday, called for the renovation of the Pan African building, emphasizing that its current state exacerbates the flooding situation and remains unaddressed despite successive governments.

“Well, this building has been like this, I met it as a young girl growing up and you see it has been like this, new governors assume office and their tenure ends but no one talks about it, this flooding that happens here whenever it rains heavily can be stopped if the government renovated this building and puts proper drainage system”.

Citizens are calling for immediate action from authorities to mitigate the impact of flooding and safeguard affected communities against future occurrences.
