Odili Hails Okogbule For Improving RSU Ranking At End-of-Tenure Book Launch

The Pro-Chancellor and Governing Council Chairman of the Rivers State University, Justice Mary Odili (Rtd), has showered encomium on the outgoing Vice Chancellor, Professor Nlerum Okogbule for his contributions to the growth of the Institution, leading to its positioning as one of the best universities in Nigeria.

Justice Odili came up with this position today during a special valedictory lecture organised by the Rivers State University in honour of the outgoing VC, Prof Nlerum Okogbule at the Senate Chambers, Rivers State University, Nkpolu-Oroworokwo, Port Harcourt.

Speaking at the event, Justice Odili underscored the importance of valedictory ceremonies, pointing out that they offer an opportunity for both the institution and its leader to jointly reflect on their journey of service and operations.

Justice Odili, who chaired the occasion, commended Professor Okogbule for his dedication and impact on the university, particularly in strengthening the academic curriculum across board.

“He is patient and focused. Through his roles as Head of Department, Dean of the Faculty of Law, Dean of the Postgraduate School, and now Vice-Chancellor, he has helped position this university among the best in Nigeria”.

She conveyed gratitude on behalf of the 13th and 14th governing councils, acknowledging Prof. Okogbule’s commitment to advancing the institution’s founding vision and supporting the aspirations of the university’s visitor, Governor Siminalayi Fubara.

In his address, Professor Okogbule expressed appreciation to the Governing Councils and leadership he worked with throughout his five-year tenure.

He highlighted key accomplishments, including the induction of RSU’s first set of medical doctors and nurses, the establishment of functional satellite campuses, and the demolition of a security village that had become a criminal hideout on campus.

Acknowledging the support of both former Governor Nyesom Wike and Governor Siminalayi Fubara, he said, “I am grateful to former Governor Wike for appointing me and supporting my tenure, and to Governor Fubara for his unwavering faith in me, ensuring that political considerations did not influence his decisions.”

Delivering the guest lecture, Prof. Abdulwahab Egbewole, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ilorin, praised Prof. Okogbule for navigating one of the most challenging leadership roles in academia successfully.

Speaking on the topic “Starting Strong and Finishing Well” Prof. Egbewole emphasized the need for improved work ethics in Nigeria, noting that institutional leaders must create environments that promote excellence, accountability, and productivity.

Highpoint of the valedictory lecture was the presentation of the book “Festschrift of Prof. Nlerum Sunday Okogbule: A Compendium of Achievements at Rivers State University Nkpolu-Oroworukwo, Port Harcourt”, with a review delivered by Prof. Afeisimi Badaiki.
