The Northern Youths Assembly (Majalisar Matasan Arewa) has raised concerns over the Tax Reforms Bill currently before the National Assembly, urging lawmakers to reject the bill, which they believe would not serve the interests of the people, particularly the youth.
In an open letter to lawmakers, signed by the group’s President, Dr. Ali Mohammed, and Secretary-General, Dr. Garba Abduljafiz, the assembly called for broader consultations before passing such legislation.
The youth group emphasized that the future of Nigeria hinges on investment in education, skills development, and job creation. “The youth are Nigeria’s future, and our prosperity depends on policies that focus on these areas,” the letter stated.
The group also called for the creation of a special platform to allow youth participation in shaping policies that foster sustainable development, economic empowerment, and job creation.
Furthermore, the Northern Youths Assembly urged lawmakers to prioritize laws that would enhance Nigeria’s investment climate and foster job opportunities for the growing youth population.
They also cautioned against following the advice of international bodies such as the IMF and the World Bank, warning that their policies could harm the nation’s economic prospects.
The group’s letter closed with a call for the National Assembly to redirect its efforts toward creating laws that encourage foreign investment, job creation, and skills development while avoiding policies that might stifle economic growth.
