The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has fined the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) the fine of N1.69bn for overbilling customers.

The regulatory document, ORDER/NERC/2024/114, which was dated August 30, 2024 and signed by NERC’s Vice Chairman, Musiliu Oseni, and Commissioner, Legal, Licensing and Compliance, Dafe Akpeneye, was published on NERC’s website on Thursday, September 12, 2024.

It was released as part of the Commission’s September 2024 Supplementary Order.

In the letter, NERC stated that the fine was issued due to AEDC’s failure to comply with the Commission’s earlier directive on limiting estimated billing for electricity customers.

Following an investigation into AEDC’s billing methods, NERC discovered that the company had overbilled customers between January and September 2023. As a result, a fine was imposed, amounting to 10 percent of the overcharged sum.
