Four months ago, a Magistrate Court in Abuja summoned five individuals for allegedly defaming the reputation of Mercy Chinwo and her husband. The lawsuit, led by the couple’s legal team, stems from a paternity claim made by the defendants after the couple posted a picture of their son on Instagram. The defendants alleged that the child resembled another gospel singer, Nathaniel Bassey, and claimed he was the father, a rumor that quickly spread across social media.

In the criminal complaint, the couple’s lawyers argued that the defendants’ actions amounted to cyber intimidation, injurious falsehood, and cyberstalking. The legal proceedings have attracted significant attention, highlighting the challenges public figures face in protecting their personal lives from online defamation.
