In a significant boost to education in Okrika Local Government Area of Rivers State, the Chairman, Achese Igwe has fully funded the WAEC registration fees for students from eight schools, including Comprehensive Secondary School, Ibaka Town.
Speaking with Kristina Reports on Monday, February 17, 2025, the school’s principal, Alaibi Nnana, confirmed that 186 students have benefited from the initiative.

He commended the chairman’s generosity, emphasizing how it has relieved financial pressure on parents and guardians.
“The WAEC, CASS, and thumbprinting fees have been cleared. However, we still have some outstanding debts that need to be settled for full WAEC clearance,”

As a community-owned school, he noted that stakeholders would soon meet to discuss ways to cover the remaining expenses, particularly for students on transfer and external candidates who struggle to afford even the minimal registration fee.
“This is the first time a local government chairman is making such a remarkable impact, and we hope the legacy continues”.

Students also expressed their gratitude. Senior Prefect Elizabeth Tamunopekerebia described the initiative as a great relief for parents and pledged to study harder to justify the support.
However, she also appealed for the renovation of school facilities and the provision of laboratory equipment.

“Our library is lacking, and many of our lab materials have either been stolen or are outdated. We urgently need new chemicals and equipment to enhance learning”.
Sports Prefect, Noble Ibinabo also shared his excitement but highlighted the need for better training facilities.
“We don’t have proper training kits, which affects our preparation. More sports resources will help us perform better”.
The initiative has been widely praised, with hopes that similar educational support will continue in the future.
