IWD 2026: RSU Bolsters Anti-Harassment Measures, Champions Gender Parity
Rivers State University (RSU) has marked International Women’s Day 2026 with a significant step to strengthen its anti-sexual harassment measures and champion gender parity, underscoring the institution’s commitment to a safe and equitable environment for all.
International Women’s Day, celebrated annually on March 8, is a global event that recognizes the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women. The day also serves as a call to action for accelerating gender equality, addressing issues like violence against women, access to education and healthcare, and women’s representation in leadership.

This year’s general theme – “Give to Gain” – highlight the need for collective action in dismantling barriers to equality and promoting reciprocity and collaboration.
In a remark to commemorate the day, Vice-Chancellor Professor Isaac Zeb-Obipi highlighted RSU’s commitment to gender equity, citing the appointment of women to key leadership positions, including heads of faculties, departments, and committees.
“We are moving beyond rhetoric,” Professor Zeb-Obipi declared. “Our female researchers have accounted for a significant percentage of institution-based research funding, and some have achieved global firsts in their fields, including the university’s first Professor of Social Work and Environmental Sustainability, a female.”
“The university has strengthened its anti-sexual harassment policy and is committed to empowering female students and staff. “We see and value you,” Professor Zeb-Obipi said, urging men to be active allies in promoting equity.
The remark celebrated the “RSU Woman” – in laboratories, lecture halls, and administrative offices – and urged the girl-child (female students) to shatter ceilings, emphasizing that “gender is not a barrier, but a reservoir of unique strength, perspective, and resilience.”
Looking ahead, Professor Zeb-Obipi pledged continued support for women’s innovation and research, ensuring they have resources to lead.
“My administration will continue to widen the door… We are not just giving you a seat at the table, we are ensuring you have the resources to lead the conversation.” He urged men to be active allies, saying “True progress is only possible when we all realize that a win for the women of RSU is a win for the entire university.”
