Rivers State has emerged victorious in various sporting expeditions; From U17 Football to Basketball, to Volleyball and Chess, the State has shown its prowess.
Speaking at a press briefing after the State Executive Council Meeting on Wednesday, May 15, 2024, Commissioner for Information, Joseph Johnson expressed his delight as he highlighted several achievements, stating that Rivers State has made significant strides in the sporting sector.
Rivers United emerged champions of the inaugural Nigeria Premier Football League U17 Youth League, defeating Katsina United 4-2. Additionally, the state excelled in the National Beach Volleyball competition, with the male team winning first place and the female team securing second position.
In the National Open Chess Competition, Rivers State’s Queen Dan Jumbo took first place and was named the best women’s player. The state also dominated the National Open Table Tennis Championship, winning three gold medals and earning the title of best overall team.
Furthermore, the Rivers Hoopers Basketball Club came out top of the Sahara Conference in the Basketball Africa League in Dakar, Senegal, to advance to the playoffs; a significant achievement on the continental stage. The KingsMen would compete in the Playoffs from May 24 to June 1 in Kigali, Rwanda.
Also recall, that Rivers United Men’s team became Nigeria’s sole representative in the continent this year, before exiting in the quarter-final. Seven-time NWFL Champions, Rivers Angels, who became Nigeria’s first Continental representative in 2021, finished top in group B of the Nigerian Women’s Football League regular season and will participate in the Super Six which is billed to begin on Saturday, May 18 and end on Sunday, May 26, 2024, at the Samson Siasia stadium in Yenegoa, Bayelsa to stand a chance to clinch the title.
