Impeachment Saga: IGP Egbetokun Redeploys New CP to Rivers State

In a bid to exculpate the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) from further involvement in the political crisis brewing there, the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, PhD has deployed a new Commissioner of Police, Olatunji Disu, to Rivers State.

Disu takes over from the erstwhile Commissioner of Police, Emeka Polycarp Nwonyi, PhD.

Born on Thursday, April 14, 1966 and joined the Nigeria Police Force on Monday, May 18, 1992, the new Commissioner of Police holds a Bachelor’s degree in English from the Lagos State University, Ojo, Lagos State.

He later obtained a ‘double barreled’ Master’s degree in Criminology, Security and Legal Psychology from his alma mater, and another in Public Administration from Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba Akoko, Ondo State.

After joining the force, he rose through the ranks to head various divisions across the country such as the Ikare Division, Ondo State, Elimgbu and Elelenwo Divisions in Rivers State.

While in Rivers State, he also served as the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of the State Criminal Investigations and Intelligence Department (SCIID), as well as Commander of Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) and anti-kidnapping unit.

In 2005, following his impressive service record, he was assigned to lead the Nigeria police contingent to the African Union peace keeping mission in Dafur, Sudan.

Thereafter, in 2015- August 2021, he was deployed to serve as Commander of the Rapid Response Squad in Lagos State.

He was later redeployed by then Inspector General of Police, Usman Alkali Baba to assume command of the Intelligence Response Team (IRT) following the removal of its former Commander, Abba Kyari.

While head of the IRT, he led the team that tracked down the killers of retired Captain Geoffrey Zwalmark and recovered his corpse in etche Local Government area.

He later served as Deputy Commissioner of Police, Operations, Force Headquarters, Abuja.

Upon assumption of office, Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun appointed him as Principal Staff to his office.

He is a member of the International Association of Chiefs of Police, and Nigeria institute of Public Relations (NIPR) and has attended several professional courses such as the small arms smuggling training in Botswana; internet fraud training at Cambridge; and strategic leadership command course at Police Staff College, Jos.

He became a judoka in 1986 and has attained the enviable height of third Dan black belt. He has won several laurels including a silver medal in the 33rd US open Judo championship held in the United States.
