Imo Lawyer Chinedu Agu Arraigned for Criticising Governor Uzodinma

The Imo State Police Command on Wednesday, September 24, 2025, arraigned lawyer and activist, Chinedu Agu, before a Magistrate’s Court in Owerri on charges bordering on defamation, cyberstalking, incitement of civil disturbance, and conduct likely to cause a breach of the peace.

Police confirmed that Agu was arrested on Tuesday, September 23, 2025, following a series of statements he allegedly made against the administration of Governor Hope Uzodinma. According to investigators, his remarks were considered defamatory and capable of stirring unrest in the state.

At Wednesday’s arraignment, prosecutors informed the court that Agu’s actions violated provisions of Nigeria’s cybercrime and criminal laws. The charges included the publication of alleged false information online, with authorities claiming the lawyer intended to discredit the state government and incite public disorder.

Court documents presented during the proceedings cited Agu’s posts on social media platforms as evidence, while the prosecution urged the magistrate to remand him in custody pending trial.

Although details of Agu’s bail application were not immediately clear at press time, his arraignment sparked mixed reactions across Owerri. Civil society actors and some members of the legal community expressed concern that the charges could be politically motivated, while others insisted that all citizens must be held accountable for their public utterances.

The Imo State Police Command maintained that the arrest was lawful and necessary. “No one is above the law. The suspect’s actions were inciting and capable of causing a breakdown of law and order,” a spokesperson said in Owerri.

The case has now been adjourned, with further hearings expected in the coming weeks.
