  • Warns Nigeria LNG to Call Contractors to Order

The Ijaw Youth Council (IYC) has raised alarm over what it deems as an attempt by SCD JV (Saipem, Chiyoda and Daewoo Joint Venture), the contractor handling the Nigeria LNG Train 7 project, to cause security crisis in Bonny Local Government Area of Rivers State.

The SCD JV is handling the Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) aspect of the project.

The IYC came out with this in a press release signed by the Special Assistant on Media to the Chairman, IYC, Ibani Clan, Owupele Pepple on Wednesday, March 16, 2022 and made available to Kristina Reports in Bonny, Rivers State.

The group accused the EPC consortium of violating the salary benchmark set by Bonny Kingdom through the Bonny Kingdom Local Content Compliance Committee in conjunction with the joint trade unions in Bonny LGA.

“In the wake of the recent happenings on our Bonny Train 7 jobs, the Ijaw Youth Council (IYC), Ibani Clan, calls on the Nigeria LNG to caution Saipem Nigeria Ltd and Daewoo Nigeria Ltd not to breach the peace which the King, His Majesty has Sustained in Bonny Kingdom.”

“The minimum wage that the BKLCCC Signed is N336,000 for Level 1 workers, and they have not signed the MOU yet but Train 7 has started. Saipem Nigeria Ltd and Daewoo Nigeria Ltd rather went ahead and constituted unions in order to cause trouble in Bonny Kingdom.”

The statement announced that the IYC frowns at such moves by the consortium and advised the Nigeria LNG to call its contractor to order by compelling them to sign the memorandum of understanding with Bonny Kingdom.

We, the Ijaw Youth Council frowns at it; we call on NLNG Ltd to advise their contractors, Saipem Nigeria Ltd and Daewoo Nigeria Ltd, to sign the MOU. Now, we are begging soon, they will start begging us.”

Efforts to reach the SCD JV and the Nigeria LNG to react to the allegation by the Ijaw Youth Council (IYC) was yet unsuccessful as at the time of this report as the focal persons on either side were yet to respond to enquiries sent to their mobile lines.

The Bonny Kingdom Local Content Compliance Committee (BKLCCC) and the Bonny Kingdom Youth and Employment Committee (BKYEC) had announced a new salary benchmark set at N336,000 per month for Level 1 workers via a joint communique issued after a joint meeting on Saturday, November 13, 2021, with stakeholders at the Ibanise Hall, Akiama, Bonny.
