There has been a major push to improve healthcare access in Rivers State, especially, in Bonny Local Government Area, where the Senator representing Rivers West Senatorial District in the National Assembly, Ipalibo Harry-Banigo is leading the charge to amend the Federal Medical Centre (FMC) Act to establish a new facility in Bonny.

Addressing stakeholders, especially, her colleagues, at a Public Hearing on the bill on Thursday, February 27, 2025 in the nation’s capital, Abuja, Senator Banigo appealed to them to support the expedited passage of the bill.

In a statement on Thursday, February 27, 2025 signed by her Legislative/Media Aide, Soala Dasimaka, the Senator emphasized the urgent need for better healthcare for residents and visitors to Bonny LGA and surrounding communities.

“For too long, people in Bonny have had to take risky boat trips to Port Harcourt just to get medical care. This has cost too many lives, especially mothers and infants. It’s time we change that.”

“Bonny Island is home to Nigeria’s thriving oil and gas industry, yet it lacks a tertiary healthcare facility. This bill seeks to change that by bringing quality healthcare closer to home.”

“The proposed Federal Medical Centre would provide emergency response and specialized care, create economic opportunities, boost medical research, and reduce pressure on existing hospitals.”

“This isn’t just about healthcare; it’s about investing in people. A healthy community is a thriving community.”

She urged stakeholders and community leaders present at the hearing to lend their support to the bill, ensuring it meets the specific needs of Bonny residents.

“Your voices matter in shaping this bill; with your support, we can make this a reality and bridge the healthcare gap.”

The statement echoed the Senator’s sentiments, emphasizing the importance of fast-tracking the bill’s passage to bring relief to Bonny residents.

As the bill moves forward in the legislative process, all eyes are on the National Assembly to ensure swift action. Bonny residents are hopeful that this long-overdue project will finally become a reality.
