Family Demands Probe Over Alleged NSCDC Shooting That Killed Tekena in Bori

A family in Bori, Khana Local Government Area, is demanding an independent investigation into the death of Tekena, who was allegedly shot dead in their compound on Wednesday, July 15, 2026, by men they identified as operatives of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps.

The deceased’s father, who is visually impaired, said the incident started when his younger brother told him that two NSCDC personnel and a civilian came to their home over an allegation that Tekena had wounded someone. He said the men claimed they spent ₦65,000 treating the victim and came “to complain so that Tekena would not wound another person.”

The father said after welcoming the visitors, he went upstairs to wear a shirt. When he came down, he noticed they were no longer in the parlour.

“I called out to my brother to ask where the Civil Defence people were. Before I finished, I heard gunshots. Not one, not two, not three times,” he said.

He added that he later heard voices saying “them don kill am” and was told it was Tekena. While still upstairs, he said he heard his son cry out.

“Daddy, they are lying against me. I did not wound anybody. I did not do it,” he quoted Tekena as saying.

A female occupant of the house said neighbours came after hearing the shots. She initially barred them but later allowed two people in after they said they wanted to “straighten” Tekena’s body. Family members allege that a knife was later placed on the body and photographs taken to suggest Tekena attacked the operatives. The father further alleged that Tekena was shot through a hole in the fence of the compound.

Tekena’s younger brother said he left to get a vehicle to take him to hospital but returned to meet him on the floor.

As of press time, the NSCDC Rivers State Command and the Rivers State Police Command had not responded to requests for comment.

Community members are calling on authorities to investigate the circumstances surrounding Tekena’s death.
