Success in the Management of Change (MOC) drive of corporate organizations and public institutions should integrate considerations of the linkages between Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) and Waste Management as these are all intertwined.

President of the Waste Management Society of Nigeria (WAMASON), Chief Akpabio Esien advanced this position in an interview with Kristina Reports on Sunday, March 27, 2022 in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.

He stated that Management of Change (MOC), the subject of his recent presentation at the American Society of Safety Professionals (ASSP) PDC, which is an HSE Tool for Risk Management, can be synchronized into the processes for managing wastes given that waste management that is not properly implemented can have adverse effects on the health of staff and wellbeing of the environment.

Chief Akpabio, who was recently inducted into the Institute of Safety Professionals of Nigeria (ISPoN), the umbrella Association for Occupational Safety Professionals in Nigeria, posited that the overall wellbeing of staff and the environment the organization operates in is key to the success of such organization, urging the leadership of corporates and public institutions to take this consideration into account.

A seasoned Quality, Health, Safety, Security, Environment (QHSSE) expert, the WAMASON President pushed for a rejigging of the collaborative paradigm between Waste Management and QHSSE practitioners with a view to redrawing the blueprint for managing both aspects, which, he described as critical to organizational progress and economic growth of businesses.

According to him, where QHSSE principles are not adhered to in Waste Management, there are bound to be outcomes that would be inimical to both personnel and organization in terms of accidents, infections, loss of revenue and reputational damage, arguing that these imperatives render the synergy between practitioners and integration of best practices in that regard inevitable.

Chief Akpabio, who expressed concern over statistics that indicate that “over one million people sustain workplace related accidents which affect them economically, physically, and socially; some three million workers meet untimely death from occupational accidents and work-related diseases while about 400 million workers suffer from non-fatal workplace incidents, aligned with the notion that poor implementation of QHSSE maybe blamed for such unfortunate outcomes.

He insisted that the time is now to match words with action in entrenching processes and practices that safeguard lives at the workplace and protect the environment, calling on his colleagues in the Waste Management Society of Nigeria (WAMASON) to exude the sense of responsibility that comes with their field of expertise.

Chief Akpabio Esien, who has been involved in environmental activism, workplace safety advocacy and promotion of global best practices in both the public and private sectors in the last 30 years, was elected into office as the President of the Waste Management Society of Nigeria (WAMASON) on Friday, May 21, 2021 at the 3rd International Waste Management Summit/Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the body.

He was elected alongside Professor Sodienye Abere, First Vice President; Ahmed Hamid, Second Vice President; Yakubu Waziri, Secretary; and Sir Abu Benson, Public Relations Officer, among others.
