As violence continues to emanate from different parts of the state in the on going #EndSARS protest, Kayode Abayomi, Head of Public Affairs, Lagos State Ministry of Education, said on Monday that the state is considering asking students “stay at home for now”.
Academic activities were affected in some parts of state yesterday such as Mushin, Ikate, Ijanikin, Yaba, Ikorodu, Agege, Ikorodu and Mile 12, thereby preventing students and teachers from having easy access to commute to schools due to unfriendly nature of the protest.
Recall that October 19, 2020 was the date that all schools in the state were mandated to resume. The schools were shut sometime in March as a result of the growing spread of the coronavirus.
“We are considering the option of asking the students to stay at home, for now, pending when the protests will be over.
“It is at the consideration level. We are waiting for the governor’s directive in that aspect. As soon as we get the directive to go ahead, we can then ask them to stay at home for now,” he said.
A public school teacher asserts that many of his colleagues were unable to come to school as well as students except for those in close proximity to the school.
“I was in school but many of my colleagues could not come; especially those from Agege, Ikorodu and Mile 12.
“A few pupils who stay close to the school came and those of us available taught them,” said Ajeigbe K, the school teacher.
Also in Ikeja, a student from Government Technical College, Agidingbi, Olasunkanmi, said, “The protesters blocked the road. When I was coming from Ebute-Metta, I got vehicles in the morning, but I was stranded when I was returning home. The transport fares also increased so I went to stay with my sister that stays around my school.”
According to reports, violence erupted in Yaba area when some hoodlums attacked operatives of the Rapid Response Squad (RSS).
