As the Rivers State Government amplifies its efforts to improve the lot of women, non-governmental organizations (NGOs) championing women’s causes have been advised upon to deepen their corporate integrity for such efforts to yield optimum results.

This advice was given on Wednesday, July 26, 2023 by the State Commissioner for Women Affairs, Dr Roseline Uranta when the executives of the Coalition of Niger Delta Women paid her a courtesy visit in her office in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.

She advised that this can be achieved by having such NGOs registered with the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) to enjoy government patronage and support.

“It is only women groups that have such registration that will be affiliated with the Ministry.”

She stated that the present administration under the leadership of Governor Siminialayi Fubara would do everything possible to consolidate on the gains of the immediate past administration to improve the welfare of women.

Dr Uranta disclosed that to achieve this, the State Government Skill Development Centre for Women would be Commissioned early next month.

The Commissioner solicited for support and collaboration with various pro-women non-governmental organisations in the State, urging them to feel free and come to the Ministry with vital suggestions on how to improve the lot of women, thanking the group for the visit which she said was the first since she assumed office.

Earlier, the President of the group and Deputy Director of Women Affairs International Human Rights Protection, Mary Mbagwu congratulated the Commissioner on her appointment, saying “you are, indeed, a round peg in a round hole”.

Mbagwu said that the visit was aimed at rubbing minds with the Commissioner in the area of planning various programmes that would examine and ascertain critical areas of concerns and develop a plan of action for the advancement of women and the girl child.

“The group mission is to have a society where women of different cultures, religion and racial beliefs can come together and speak in one voice, so that they can achieve their various goals.”
