Remo Stars FC will on Sunday, August 18, 2024, face Moroccan club, AS FAR in the first leg of the CAF Champions League preliminary round tie at Remo Stars Stadium, Ikenne, at 16:00 hrs.
The Sky Blue Stars, who secured their third continental outing by finishing second in the Nigeria Premier Football League, aim to avenge their previous defeat against the Black Army. In the 2022/23 CAF Confederation Cup preliminary round, AS FAR eliminated Remo Stars, winning 2-1 on aggregate after a 1-1 draw in Morocco in the first leg and a 1-0 win in Nigeria in the return leg.
Remo Stars made their continental debut in the 2022-23 season, participating in the CAF Confederation Cup qualifying rounds but failed to progress past the first round. The following season, they competed in the CAF Champions League but were defeated by Medeama FC in the first round.
AS FAR who also placed second in the Moroccan League last season, boasts more continental experience, having won the African Champions League in 1985 and the African Confederation Cup in 2005. They are also one of Morocco’s most successful clubs, with 31 titles, including 13 Botola, 12 Moroccan Throne Cups, four Moroccan Super Cups, one African Champions League, and one African Confederation Cup.
Remo Stars Coach, Daniel Ogunmodede, who recently extended his contract by three years, following back-to-back second-place finish, to reward what has been a successful tenure with the Ogun-based outfit, will lead them against AS FAR.
With Nigerian clubs having struggled against North African opponents, Ogunmodede and his men would aim to do better than to improve on their previous performance and pass the North African test.
Mashood Ssali of Uganda will serve as the central referee of the game, as named by the football association.
