Rivers United played out a goalless draw against Etoile Filante of Burkina Faso in the second preliminary round of the CAF Confederation Cup on Sunday night at the Municipal Stadium in Yamoussoukro, Côte d’Ivoire.
It was a decent result for the Pride of Rivers on the road and it will be all to fight for when both sides meet for the second leg in Port Harcourt, Rivers, with Rivers United having the home advantage.
Coach Stanley Eguma while speaking after the game, attributed part of the team’s draw to the absence of competitive games.
Rivers United went into the tie without the Nigeria Premier Football League in progress while the opposition had played two league games and were victorious in both.
“It was not 100 percent performance because this is the first time we will be in a competitive competition but I gave them kudos to the players.
“Our tactical plans didn’t fail us, we dominated the game and created more chances, by the time we work more on these tactics the goals will definitely come.
“It is good to play at home, it is our fortress and we are hoping our fans will come and cheer us.
“This is a new team and we want our fans to come and cheer us and we are going to cap it with a victory. “
The Pride of Rivers made it to the quarter-final stage at the last edition of the competition and would look to edge closer when they host Etoile Filante in the all-important second leg at the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium, Port Harcourt on Sunday, October 1, 2023.
