Oct 1, 2020

Emerging details of the attack on the new office of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) of the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) in Oyigbo Local Government Area of Rivers State indicate that youths of the area allegedly attacked the facility.

An eyewitness disclosed that the attack was to protest against the allocation of the place to the Police unit.

The SARS facility was attacked, one operative reportedly killed, several others injured and a police van set ablaze during the incident which occurred in the early hours of October 1, 2020.

The eyewitness, who spoke on the phone, said youths in the area attacked the facility to protest the alleged incessant killings of their kinsmen in the State by SARS operatives.

He further revealed that the incident was a reaction to the decision by the Chairman of Oyigbo Local Government Area, Gerald Oforji to allocate a space for use as office by the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS).

“The state Governor, Nyesom Wike had before now condemned the recent killing of Rivers born artiste by the said security operatives”.

“I don’t know why the Chairman brought SARS to Oyigbo. We don’t like them, he should send them back to wherever he brought them. They have killed several of our youths for no reason.

“As I speak, the state Governor is not happy with SARS, he has ordered them to leave Rivers state,” he added.

The Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) of the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has recently come under public condemnation over the alleged extra-judicial killing of a 20-year old upcoming musician, Chibuike Daniel Dominic, alias ‘Sleek’ in Elelenwo Community in Rivers State.

Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike had, via his official twitter handle, @GovWike, condemned the killing, calling for the disbandment of SARS, and charging the inspector General of Police (IGP) Mohammed Adamu to rein in his men.
