In the wake of the recent defections afflicting the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) there have been leadership changes across board to reposition and reinvigorate the party ahead of the 2023 general elections.
With the decamping of George Tolofari, erstwhile leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Bonny LGA, to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) late Thursday, July 21, 2022, his deputy and former House of Representatives member, Tonye Longjohn has already assumed as his replacement.
State Treasurer of the APC in Rivers State, Maxwell Akwe confirmed this in a response to Kristina Reports enquiry on the state of things in the party with the exit of their leader in his home LGA.
Akwe, who was a former Secretary to the Bonny Local Government Council, declined further discussion on the matter.
But the party’s Director of Publicity in Bonny LGA, Adolf Pepple said the role is an interim one until a substantive appointment is made.
“For now, I believe that the Deputy Leader, Hon. Tonye Longjohn will be acting until the substantive leader is appointed.”
Corroborating this position, a stalwart of the party from Ward 12, Bonny LGA, Ibifubara Tolofari told Kristina Reports that “It will go to Hon. Tonye Longjohn”.
There were divided opinion on the capacity of the former House of Representatives member to string the party in Bonny LGA together, especially, ahead of the jostle for victory in the forthcoming 2023 polls.
While some believe he has the bonding capacity and affability to rein in different interests in the already beleaguered party, some doubt his capability to prepare the party for the vicious fight to take over Brick House, the Degema/Bonny federal constituency and Bonny Constituency seats in the coming election.
When asked what his party faithful should expect in the coming days, Longjohn only responded with “Be patient a bit, when we get to the bridge”.
