Apparently moved by compassion to checkmate further exposures to needless attacks on the waterways, the Chairman of Bonny Local Government Area, Anengi Claude-Wilcox has unveiled new travel modalities for the Bonny-Port Harcourt sea route.
Claude-Wilcox disclosed these new protocols on Tuesday, May 28, 2024 via a statement by her Press Secretary, Boma Waribor in Bonny, Rivers State.
Effective Wednesday, May 29, 2024, passenger speedboats powered by outboard engines would now sail in convoys at designated times concurrently from both the Coal Beach, Bonny and Nembe/Bonny/Bille Jetty in Port Harcourt.
The designated timelines are: Morning; 7:00am-8:30am and 10:00am-11:30am, Afternoon; 1:00pm-2:30pm and 4:00pm-5:00pm.
The statement enjoined boat operators and other jetty personnel to align with the new operational condition with a stern warning that “contrary conduct will not be condoned”.
“Accordingly, the public is advised to adjust their traveling schedules to fit the stipulated times as the Local Government is working out modalities to curb the sea challenges and guarantee a better travel experience, just as all inconveniences associated with this change are regretted.”
Sources hinted Kristina Reports that this development is the outcome of a security review of the situation following recent attacks on travelers which involved the kidnap of about five persons so far.
A security source, who spoke to Kristina Reports on condition of anonymity, hailed the move by the Bonny LGA Chairman for her deft move to contain the situation, assuring that the security agencies in the area would key in into the new arrangement and ensure safe sailing for travelers.
