Bodo-Bonny Road: Bonny Gentlemen’s League Hails FG for Project Delivery, Opposes Toll Gate

A socio-political organization, the Bonny Gentlemen’s League (BGL) has expressed its opposition to the proposed introduction of toll gates on the Bodo-Bonny Road just as it commended the President Bola Tinubu led Federal Government for delivering the project within stipulated timelines.

This position was contained in a statement it issued on Thursday, January 8, 2026 which was signed by its Chancellor; Warisenibo Kalada Dublin Green; Registrar; Dr. Victor Ibigoni Jumbo, and Chairman, Current and National Affairs Committee, Amaopusenibo Torudoghubo Jamaica.

Chancellor, Bonny Gentemen’s League (BGL), Warisenibo Kalada Green (2nd left) and Registrar, Victor Jumbo,PhD (centre, standing), and other members of the Executive during the meeting.

The League appealed to the Federal Government to promptly withdraw the policy, emphasizing that such policy was not only retrogressive but also detrimental in every respect.

“The League commended the Federal Government headed by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for its purposeful and coordinated efforts toward the completion and delivery of the Bodo-Bonny Road project.”

“A significant milestone was achieved with the temporary opening of the road on December 8, 2025, marking notable progress in addressing critical infrastructure needs in the region.”

The League also expressed its appreciation to the Minister of Works, David Umahi, for the measures and protocols articulated by him, which currently govern the use of the road, among which are the operational guidelines such as restriction of traffic between 7:00AM and 7:00PM.

It also gave thumbs up to the Minister for the prohibition of access to trucks, tricycles, and motorcycles at this stage of the project, noting that these limitations are necessary for ensuring safety and orderly use during this phase of the road’s operation.

The BGL praised the project sponsor, Nigeria Liquefied Natural Gas Limited (NLNG) for “its instrumental contributions to the realization of the Bodo-Bonny Road Project”, while expressing its appreciation to the Amanyanabo and Natural Ruler of Bonny Kingdom, His Majesty, King Edward Asimini William Dappa Pepple III, CON, and Bonny Chiefs Council (BCC) for “their supportive and collaborative roles, which were crucial in advancing the completion of this vital infrastructure”.

“Their collective efforts have significantly contributed to the progress and success of the project, demonstrating the importance of cooperation among traditional institutions, community leaders, corporate stakeholders and Government within the Bonny Kingdom.”

The N120 billion 39-kilometre Bodo-Bonny Road and Bridges project is a landmark infrastructure, being constructed by Julius Berger Nigeria Plc and funded by the NLNG under a public-private partnership with the Federal Government.

The project when completed aims to provide the first direct land link between Bonny Island in Rivers State, a crucial industrial hub for NLNG and oil activities, and other parts of Nigeria.

The road features extensive bridges over creeks and the Opobo Channel, traversing challenging swamp terrain with concrete sections for durability, with recent progress pointing towards near completion and temporary openings for community access.
