It looks like the AJ/FURY fight is finally happening. Tyson Fury took to socials on Friday, to confirm that he is ready to fight Anthony Joshua in September.
He said :
” A few days ago i sent a draft contract to @anthonyjoshua for a fight in September @wembleystadium its a fight that everyone wants to see including myself. Come of AJ lets give the world what they want to see. This time im not gonna make a million vids & keep putting pressure on. the ball is now on your side”
The fight has been dubbed as “the biggest fight In British boxing history” and has no doubt been the most anticipated for the past three years.
You would recall that after Anthony Joshua’s win against Jermaine Franklin in April, he publicly said he was ready for the fight with Fury
“I know who they want. They said Tyson Fury; the ball is in his court. I would be honoured to fight for thE WBC Heavyweight Championship of thE World.
‘If he’s listening, he knows my promoter; we’ve had dialogue before, so let’s continue this. We ain’t getting any younger.”
So, technically Joshua called the shots first, or not? There has been a number of back-and-forths so far as this fight is concerned.
On 17 May 2021, an announcement was made that the AJ/FURY fight would take place on 14 August 2021 at a venue in Saudi Arabia. However, 24 hours after the announcement, a judge in a US court ruled that Deontay Wilder was entitled to exercise his option for a third fight with Fury on a date up to 15 September. And so, Fury faced Wilder while Joshua went on to face Usyk and the much-anticipated bout was out the window.
Again, after Joshua’s loss to Usyk in 2022, Fury stated that he knows Joshua is belt-less at the moment, and that he would like to allow him to fight for the WBC heavyweight championship of the world and the lineal championship. Joshua’s camp agreed and the bout was slated for December, but it did not materialise. As a result of that, Fury vowed he would never entertain a Joshua fight again. But here we are!
Boxing fans can only hope that this one sticks.
