Anambra Agency Arrests Mother, Accomplice Over Alleged Baby Sale
The Anambra State Special Anti-Touting Squad Agency (SASA), in collaboration with the Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Welfare, has arrested a mother and her alleged accomplice for reportedly selling a newborn baby for ₦2.9 million in Awada, Idemili North Local Government Area.
The agency made this known this Friday, saying investigations revealed that the child’s mother identified as Chioma, allegedly received ₦300,000 from the sale, while her accomplice, identified as Precious Uchenna, retained the balance after facilitating the transaction.
SASA Managing Director, Monday Nwokoye, said the suspects were arrested following intelligence reports of an illegal baby adoption, adding that the baby was rescued unharmed and handed over for proper care while investigations continue.
The Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Welfare, Chinyere Onyekesi, condemned the alleged act, saying the suspects had been handed over to the police for further investigation and possible prosecution.
