All You Need to Know about the 2025 World Athletics Relays Featuring Nigeria

Nigeria will take part in the 7th edition of the World Athletics Relays which will be held at the Guangdong Olympic Stadium in Guangzhou, China from May 10 to 11, 2025.

The event which will be done in China for the first time and also feature a mixed 4 × 100 meters relay for the first time, will serve as a qualifying event for the 2025 World Athletics Championships, with the top 14 teams from the World Relays qualifying relay teams to the World Championships. There are 734 athletes from 43 federations taking part in the championships.

Nigeria is set to compete in four events at the upcoming athletics championship: the men’s 4x100m relay, women’s 4x100m relay, 4x400m mixed relay, and the newly introduced 4x100m mixed relay.

The men’s 4x100m team includes Favour Ashe, Karlington Anunagba, Folawiyo Olaoye, Alaba Akintola, Udodi Onwuzurike, and Usheoritshe Itshekiri. The women’s 4x100m team features Tobi Amusan, Favour Ofili, Jennifer Chukwuka Obi, Rosemary Chukwuma, Success Umukoro, and Tiana Eyakpobeyan.

For the 4x400m mixed relay, the team consists of Chidi Okezie, Ifeanyin Ojeli, Samson Nathaniel, George Patience Okon, Praise Idamadudu, and Omolara Ogunmakinju. The 4x100m mixed relay team will be selected from six athletes: Favour Ashe, Alaba Akintola, Udodi Onwuzurike, Rosemary Chukwuma, Favour Ofili, and Success Umukoro.

The 4x400m relay team that got disqualified at the Paris 2024 Olympics for a lane violation, has been left out from the Championship.

This new 4x100m mixed relay event, featuring a woman-woman-man-man order, will make its world stage debut in Guangzhou. Records in this event will be officially recognized by World Athletics starting January 1, 2026. Nigeria qualified for the event through a combination of performances at the Paris 2024 Olympics and the African Games.
