A POSITION PAPER/DEMANDS OF THE PEOPLE OF THE ANCIENT KINGDOM OF ASARAMA IN ANDONI LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA OF RIVERS SATE, ONE OF THE HOST AND IMPACTED COMMUNITIES OF THE ONGOING “BODO-ASARAMATORU-BONNY ROAD” PROJECT BEING CONSTRUCTED BY THE CONSTRCUTION GIANT, JULIUS BERGER PLC, HIRED BY THE FEDERAL MINISTRY OF WORKS, ABUJA, NIGERIA

After being totally neglected, since the commencement of the above named road project which traversed our ancient territory/community called Asaramatoru and after carrying out a peaceful protest guaranteed by the laws of the land on starting from the 6th day of July, 2022 at the site of the project within the territory of Asarama by our youths, against all the perceivable injustice(s) perpetrated by the construction giant, Julius Berger Plc and its subcontractors operating within our territory aforesaid; we the people of the ancient Kingdom of Asarama in a resolution from a General Assembly held on 10th day of July 2022 present the following unconditional  demands through Julius Berger Plc being the company currently operating in our territory (aforesaid) to the Federal Ministry of Works, their Client:

  1. That the name of the bridge crossing Asaramatoru River should be called Asarama River Bridge and not “Opobo Channel Bridge” as it was wrongly and maliciously named in the project documents/designs and same published by the Federal Ministry of Works in at least two national dailies and twenty copies of them made available to Asarama Kingdom. 
  • The renaming of the road correctly as Bodo – Asaramatoru – Bonny Road, as against: “Bodo – Bonny Road”, as it was wrongly named.  
  • The renaming of the second bridge at the southern part/back of Asaramatoru across the Ochan River to read: “Ochan River Bridge” and not: “Nanabie Bridge” as it was wrongly labeled in the construction documents.
  • The payment of Three Billion Naira (3,000,000,000.00) only being compensation for the construction a flat bridge across Asarama River, which is done deliberately to put an end to maritime business activities on our river till the end of time.
  • The Payment of One Billion Naira (1,000,000,000.00) compensation for the dredging of sand, mud and consequent devastation of our aquatic biosphere in the course of the construction of the project.
  • a) The Employment of Asarama Kingdom person as the Community Liaison Officer (CLO) and calculation of all the salaries and remunerations due him since the start of the project till date and same paid to him, having been deliberately denied this position from the start of the project, a position which the company had given to other ethnic communities that are hosts and directly impacted by the project.
  • The sustenance of the contact person employed from Asaramatoru who is already serving as a quick intermediary between Asaramatoru community, the companies and other residents of the area concerning other related issues such as the impact of the project execution on their economic well-beings.
  • The inclusion of two Asarama Kingdom persons in the project’s Peace Committee such as it was done to Bonny and Bodo kingdoms.  
  • The employment of Asarama youths and professionals such as: 40% Skilled, 45% Semi-skilled and 100 % Unskilled labour of various categories and paying them salaries and remunerations to be calculated from the beginning of the project till date, since our teeming youths have been denied such legitimate rights from the beginning of the project.
  • The Construction of a Spur into Asaramatoru to enable Asarama Kingdom access the road on completion.
  • The employment of at least six (6) Asarama Kingdom indigenes as permanent staff of Julius Berger Plc.
  1. The inclusion of Asarama Kingdom people in the provision of subcontract services such as:

(a). Supplies of diesels, petrol, etc. to Julius Berger and subsidiary firms.

(b). Supplies of sand through Dredging International or any other related companies.

(c). Contract for the supplies of other consumables such as foodstuffs, toiletries, safety equipment, etc. 

The provisions of basic development infrastructures such as:

Sand-filling of Asaramatoru to the extend to be determined by Asarama Kingdom and acceptable by Julius Berger and the Federal Ministry of Works.

Provision of portable water in Asaramatoru.

Construction of 60 kilometer road in Asarama Town, and

Construction of six classroom block at a location to be determined by Asarama kingdom.

The electrification of Asaramatoru; and

The payment of the sum of fifty Million naira (N50,000,000.00), only to make necessary sacrifices customarily needed to remove the native gods, goddesses, marine spirits and other ethereal essences domiciled at the project site in the course of Asarama Kingdom’s protest aforementioned.
