RIFF 2026: Rivers International Film Festival Announces 33 Award Categories as 3,021 Films Enter Competition
The Rivers International Film Festival (RIFF) 2026 has officially unveiled its award categories for this year’s edition, with thousands of film submissions from across the globe competing for recognition in various aspects of filmmaking, storytelling, creativity and film tourism.
According to the festival organisers, the 2026 edition attracted 3,021 film submissions from 182 countries, underscoring the growing international profile of the Rivers International Film Festival and its ambition to position Rivers State as a destination for global cinema and film tourism.
Of the films submitted, 356 were selected, while 136 films received nominations across the festival’s competitive categories.
The festival said the submissions reflect the diversity of contemporary filmmaking, with entries spanning documentaries, feature films, short films, animation, acting, technical production and films focused on destinations, culture and tourism.
Among the major categories are Best African Film, Best International Film, Best Film for Tourism Promotion, Best Film Location, Best Story – Feature Length, Best Documentary Story, Best Short Film and Best Narrative Film.
The technical categories include Best Props, Best Make-Up/Special Effects, Best Costume, Best Sound Design, Best Cinematography and Best Editing, with separate recognitions provided for documentary and feature-length productions.
RIFF 2026 will also recognise outstanding performances through awards for Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Supporting Actor and Best Supporting Actress, while its animation segment features categories including Best Animator Director, Best Animated Short Film, Best Animated Feature Length Film, Best Animated Story/Screenplay, Best Voice Performance in Animation, Best Character Design and Overall Best Animation.
In the documentary segment, awards will include Best Documentary Title, Best Documentary Story, Best Sound Design – Documentary, Best Cinematography – Documentary, Best Editing – Documentary and Best Director – Documentary, culminating in the Overall Best Documentary award.
The feature film competition will similarly culminate in the Overall Best Film – Feature Length, alongside awards for directing, cinematography, editing, sound design and storytelling.
The festival organisers said the awards are designed not merely to celebrate finished films but also to recognise the creative vision, technical craftsmanship, cultural identity and storytelling excellence that go into filmmaking.
A major focus of RIFF 2026 is the relationship between cinema and tourism. The Best Film for Tourism Promotion category is intended to recognise productions that effectively showcase destinations, cultures, attractions and tourism experiences, reflecting the festival’s broader emphasis on using film as a tool for economic development.
The 2026 festival is being held under the theme, “Film Tourism: A Pathway to Economic Development,” with the organisers positioning cinema as a potential driver of destination marketing, cultural exchange, investment and local economic opportunities.
With the theme, “From Africa to the World. From Stories to Destinations. From Film to Economic Opportunity,” RIFF says it seeks to connect the creative industry with the tourism economy while providing an international platform for filmmakers.
The Rivers International Film Festival 2026 is scheduled to hold from October 29 to November 1, 2026, in Bonny Island, Rivers State, Nigeria.
The Festival Director, Osunwa Kenneth Chigozie, congratulated the selected filmmakers and nominees, while commending the festival’s jury team for its work throughout the selection and nomination process.
The organisers have encouraged members of the public and film enthusiasts to view the nominated films and categories through the festival’s social media platforms, including RIFF Festivals on Facebook and @riffestivals on TikTok.
RIFF 2026 is expected to bring together filmmakers, creatives, industry stakeholders, tourism promoters and audiences in Bonny for what the organisers describe as a celebration of cinema, cultural connection and destination promotion.
