Wike Moves to Reconcile with Fubara, Sets Up Magnus Abe-Led Committee

Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has disclosed that the Rainbow Coalition political family in Rivers State has constituted a reconciliation committee headed by former Senator, Magnus Abe to engage Governor Siminalayi Fubara on plans to reintegrate him and his supporters into the political fold.

Wike made the disclosure on Tuesday, August 4, 2026, during his monthly media chat in Abuja.

According to the former Rivers State governor, the committee has already established contact with Governor Fubara and is expected to meet with him within the week to conclude discussions on the proposed reconciliation.

“We have set up a committee, led by Senator Magnus Abe to go and see the Governor on how to integrate him. Not only him, there are those too who supported him.”

“I got a text from Senator Magnus this morning, he has informed the Governor and the Governor has given him a date, within the week to come. So for us, it is progress we are making for the interest of the state”.

The FCT Minister described the initiative as a significant step towards restoring political harmony in Rivers State, stressing that the process is aimed at fostering unity and advancing the overall interest of the state.

Speaking further, Wike explained that the Rainbow Coalition was created as a broad-based political alliance designed to eliminate the culture of political violence that had often characterised elections in Rivers State.

According to him, bringing together members of different political parties under one umbrella has helped reduce tensions that would ordinarily exist between rival political camps during election periods.

“You talk about the rainbow coalition, let me tell me something, you were hearing ‘ _Rivers of Blood_ ‘. Before now, as this election is coming, you would have been seeing PDP-APC fighting, because those are the two major political parties.

You see, in politics, you must keep your ears down, in politics you must also be smart. If we had concentrated only on PDP, we would have had a battle with APC. The APC is the ruling party at the national level, and also the ruling party at the state level.

“Now what we have is a situation where Labour Party, PDP, APC, AA, all together. We have governorship candidates of all these, we have state assembly and national assembly of all these.”

“And we will tell ourselves the simple truth, if candidate B appears to be more presentable, we will choose candidate B”.

Addressing criticisms that portray him as a political godfather, Wike dismissed the allegation, arguing that leadership within a political family should not be mistaken for dictatorship or undue control.

He maintained that political structures and alliances are common features of democratic politics across the world, insisting that every successful political movement has recognised leaders who provide direction for their supporters.

“Let me tell you, I was the one who laid the foundation, I flagged off the ring road, and I said that day ‘if you complete this ring road, nobody will stop you’. How do you endorse somebody more than that?

“Naturally, you have to build a system, he is from my political structure. You know what, I don’t like people talking, every time they say godfatherism, who talks about godfatherism?”

“There is nowhere in this world, whether you’re a Republican, whether you’re in Democratic Party, you have groups. Trump had his own group to make sure they take over the Republican Party. Every group will have his own leader, that does not make you a godfather”. He concluded.
