NPFL: Nasarawa United pocket ₦4m as 4–1 thrashing knocks Rivers United off top
Nasarawa United were rewarded with a cash bonus of ₦4 million after their commanding 4–1 victory over Rivers United in a Matchday 31 clash of the NPFL at the Lafia City Stadium.

The emphatic result not only shows the team’s strong form but also played a decisive role in dislodging Rivers United from the top of the league standings.
Nasarawa United earn ₦4m after dominant NPFL display
The victory came with added motivation after Nasarawa State Governor Abdullahi Sule had pledged ₦1 million for each goal scored ahead of the fixture.
Following the four-goal performance, the governor fulfilled his promise by presenting N4 million to the team after their training session on Tuesday.
While addressing the players, Sule praised their performance and linked it to earlier discussions on improving their attacking output.
“I made some observations to you when you paid me a Sallah homage last Saturday, and one of those things I spoke about was the number of goals you need to score to be technically ahead of your challengers.
“If we score so many goals, we should have some advantages, especially when points are tied.
“I am glad God answered our prayers after that Sallah homage interface, so I am here to redeem my pledge of four million naira to you as I promised on the club’s platform yesterday. Thank you for always making us and the State proud.
The result highlighted Nasarawa United’s attacking efficiency and reinforced their push for a strong finish in the NPFL season.
NPFL top spot race shifts after Rivers United defeat
Beyond the financial reward, the victory carried significant implications in the title race, as Rivers United were knocked off the NPFL top spot following the heavy defeat.

Governor Sule, who was accompanied by top government officials, also used the moment to address internal issues, warning against actions that could hinder the club’s progress in inter-club competitions.
He stressed that any conduct capable of attracting sanctions or points deductions would not be tolerated.
The governor further reaffirmed the state’s commitment to sports development, revealing that Lafia is set to host an upcoming Nigeria Football Federation Congress later in the year.
He attributed this to ongoing efforts by the Ministry of Youth and Sports Development and stakeholders in the state.
In response, the State Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, Kwanta Yakubu, commended the governor for his continued support, assuring that Nasarawa United and other teams would strive to justify the investment.
The club’s leadership, including Chairman Solomon Babanjah, as well as board members and staff, were present to receive the governor during the presentation.
Nasarawa United now sit third on the NPFL table with 50 points from 31 matches.
They will travel to Lagos for their next fixture against Kwara United, aiming to maintain momentum after a result that has strengthened both their confidence and standing in the league.
