The decision follows a controversial final that descended into chaos in Rabat on January 18, 2026.

AFCON 2025 final controversy leads to CAF ruling

The AFCON 2025 final initially ended with Senegal securing a narrow 1-0 victory after extra time. However, the match was overshadowed by a major incident late in normal time when Morocco were awarded a penalty.

Senegal players, backed by their head coach, briefly walked off the pitch in protest. Although they later returned and the penalty was missed, the disruption became the focal point of Morocco’s appeal.

CAF’s Appeal Board reviewed the incident and ruled that Senegal’s actions violated tournament regulations. As a result, the team was deemed to have forfeited the match.

Morocco crowned AFCON 2025 champions after appeal success

Following the review, CAF overturned the original result and recorded the match as a 3-0 win in favor of Morocco. This decision officially makes Morocco the winners of AFCON 2025, marking their first continental title since 1976.

CAF confirmed that the ruling was made under Articles 82 and 84 of the competition’s regulations, which address team conduct and match forfeiture.

Morocco’s football federation successfully argued that Senegal’s actions disrupted the integrity of the game. The Appeal Board upheld the protest and nullified the earlier disciplinary decision.

Additional sanctions and disciplinary decisions

Beyond the title decision, CAF also issued several rulings tied to the final:

Morocco’s Ismaël Saibari received a reduced suspension of two matches, with one suspended

A previous $100,000 fine against the player was overturned

Morocco’s federation was fined for multiple incidents, including ball boy interference and laser usage, though some penalties were reduced

A separate fine related to interference around the VAR review area was upheld

These decisions reflect CAF’s effort to address all disciplinary aspects surrounding the AFCON 2025 final.

What this means for AFCON 2025 legacy

The outcome reshapes the legacy of AFCON 2025, turning what appeared to be a Senegal triumph into one of the most controversial conclusions in African football history.

For Morocco, the ruling delivers long-awaited continental success. For Senegal, it marks a painful reversal after believing they had secured the title on the pitch.
