“Let’s Change the Story of Rivers State” NUJ Chairman Calls for Development-Focused Reporting to Boost Bonny’s Economy
The Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Rivers State Council, Paul Bazia-Nsaneh, has stressed the urgent need to shift the media narrative of Rivers State from one dominated by conflict to one that highlights development, opportunities, and economic potential.
Bazia-Nsaneh spoke as a panellist during a plenary session titled “Unlocking Bonny’s Economic Potential: Leveraging Local Enterprise, Strategic Partnerships, and Market Access for Sustainable Growth” organized by the Bonny Chamber of Commerce, Industry, Mines and Agriculture.

He underscored the power of the Press in shaping perceptions and attracting investment.
“We must change the story from Rivers of war and Rivers of blood to Rivers of possibilities and growth.”
He emphasized that journalism should focus more on development communication and agenda setting.
The NUJ Chairman drew attention to the significance of the blue economy, describing it as a critical avenue for ensuring environmental stability, food security, and sustainable livelihoods in Rivers State.
He highlighted the ocean’s vast potential as a source of wealth and called for increased funding, political will, and collaboration to harness it effectively.
“In the next 10 years, Rivers State may not have enough crude oil, and what is the next thing to do if the crude is no longer there,” he asked, advocating for strategic planning and investments in alternative sectors like marine resources and tourism.
Bazia-Nsaneh commended the Bonny Chamber for its proactive steps in exploring local opportunities, especially in tourism. “No need to go for tourism in other areas such as Zanzibar when we have our own in the Island if harnessed”.
He urged all stakeholders to amplify the positive stories of Bonny and the wider Rivers State.
He also pointed out that the completion of the Bonny-Bodo Road will be a game-changer for the region, likely to transform the area into a hub of economic activity.
“If we don’t blow the trumpet, some persons will not know we have the trumpet”, he concluded, reaffirming NUJ’s commitment to spotlighting Rivers State’s investment potential and driving the narrative of progress.
Bazia-Nsaneh’s participation in event, which was part of the Light Up Bonny Island programme, was in consolidation of the renewed partnership between the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Rivers State Council and the Bonny Chamber of Commerce, Industry, Mines and Agriculture.
