Against the backdrop of the relentless attacks by daredevil sea pirates on travellers along the Bonny-Port Harcourt sea route, the Chairman of Bonny Local Government Area, David Irimagha has appealed to the Rivers State House of Assembly (RSHA) to intervene to save the people of the area from the menace.
Iriamagha made this plea today when he briefed the House Committee on Transport on the issue of security in Bonny LGA with special emphasis on the incessant attacks by sea pirates on the Bonny-Port Harcourt sea route.
In a statement by his Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Williams Ogbah Agwu, the Bonny LG boss used the opportunity to highlight the plight of his people to the lawmakers, while calling on them to intervene to compel the security agencies to take swift and sustainable action to stem the ugly incident that has claimed the lives of several of his people, including the recent abduction of a Councillor representing Ward 9 in the Bonny Legislative Assembly, Hon. Prince Christy-Wilcox, the owner of Ben Harry Nigeria Limited, Harold Benstowe, among others.
The Rivers State House of Assembly Committee on Transport, acting on a motion brought before the Assembly by the member representing Bonny Constituency, Hon. Abinye Blessing Pepple on the issue of security along the Bonny-Port Harcourt sea route, had convened a joint stakeholders meeting with the Chairman of Bonny LGA, David Irimagha, the leadership of the Bonny Marine Transport Association (BMTA), Bonny Boat Owners Improvement Cooperative (BBOIC), and leaders of the Bonny Youths Federation (BYF).
Addressing the lawmakers, the Bonny Number One citizen expressly stated that the security and safety of everyone in Bonny LGA remains the focal point of his administration, imploring the lawmakers to use their good offices to set in motion the necessary machineries to checkmate the menace of sea piracy on the Bonny waterways.
The lawmaker representing Bonny Constituency in the Rivers State House of Assembly, Abinye Pepple had presented a motion tagged “MOTION FOR URGENT REVIEW OF SECURITY MEASURES ALONG THE PORT HARCOURT- BONNY WATERWAYS, CALL TO ACTION BY SECURITY AGENCIES”, wherein he advocated the need for urgent action by the security agencies with a view to safely secure the Port Harcourt-Bonny waterways.
After deliberations on the motion on the floor of the House, the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Ikuinyi-Owaji Ibani referred the issues raised in the motion to the House Committee on Transportation.
Speaking during the meeting, Abinye Pepple emphasised his total commitment and unwavering determination in ensuring that his constituents that utilize the sea routes are comfortable and safe.
Address the stakeholders after extensive deliberations, the Chairman of the House Committee on Transport, Prince Ngbor, who also represents Khana Constituency II, assured that the committee will also interface with the security agencies before submitting their report to the House during plenary for further resolutions and necessary action.
