The regular season of the Nigeria Women’s Football League will on Wednesday, April 30, come to an end together with the month, as teams hope to snatch the final Super Six spot.
Five teams; Rivers Angels, Bayelsa Queens, Edo Queens, Nasarawa Amazons, and Remo Stars Ladies, have already secured their place in the Super Six while Naija Ratels and FC Robo Queens are in strong contention for the coveted last spot.
For Naija Ratels, the chase could not be more intense as they take on unbeaten Bayelsa Queens, at the Area 3 Stadium, Abuja, in what is arguably the biggest match of the Matchday.
Naija Ratels are currently third in Group B with 22 points and a draw against Bayelsa Queens will see them clinch their second-ever Super Six spot, but a draw will not come easy, as they go up against a formidable opponent: the only unbeaten team in the league.
Bayelsa Queens, led by Whyte Ogbonda, have dominated Ratels in recent meetings. They won the reverse fixture 2–1 and are looking to complete an unbeaten regular season, a rare feat in the league.
Naija Ratels, who made the playoffs in 2022 during their top-flight debut, know a loss could see FC Robo Queens leapfrog them if the Lagos side beats Delta Queens.
Meanwhile, FC Robo Queens who are also vying for the lone slot, will lock horns with Delta Queens at the Legacy Pitch in Lagos and unlike Naija Ratels who have their future in their hands, only a win will keep Robo Queens’ playoff hopes alive, and even that may not be enough unless Naija Ratels lose in Abuja.
Coach Emmanuel Osahon will need his side to get all three points and then hope for help from Bayelsa Queens. If the stars align, the Lagos Landladies could snatch the final playoff spot dramatically.
What’s at Stake:
Naija Ratels: A draw or win vs Bayelsa Queens = Playoff Qualification
FC Robo Queens: Must beat Delta Queens + Hope Naija Ratels lose
Bayelsa Queens: Aim to complete an unbeaten regular season
Delta Queens: Already out of playoff contention, playing for pride.
