Rivers State Basketball Gets Boost from Legends Reunion

The Reunion of Basketball Legends event is all set to take place today, October 26, 2024, at the Basketball Stadium in Niger Street, thanks to the endorsement of Rivers State Commissioner of Sports, Christopher Green.

This maiden edition aims to not only reunite veteran Rivers basketballers but also to foster a sense of unity between old and new generations of players, encouraging young talent and promoting the sport’s growth.

The event will be divided into two sessions; the morning session which will span from, 10 am to noon, and the evening session which will begin by 2pm and close by 6pm.

Activities will consist of a meet and greet, novelty basketball match, U10-U13s match, refreshments and lots more.

Chairman of the reunion of the Basketball Legend Committee, Kendrick Okardi on Thursday, October 24, spoke to the Media in the office of the Rivers State Commissioner for Sports, Christopher Green to share information on the upcoming reunion of the Basketball Legends event.

While speaking in the presser, Kendrick Okardi, reiterated the importance of Academics whilst still pursuing a career in basketball.

He also revealed that the event will be a starting point and a new beginning for basketball in Rivers State.

With Basketball in Rivers State seeing major success, largely for the performance of the state team, Rivers Hoopers who have won five National Championships and proven their mettle on the continental stage as well as other competitions, This reunion is expected to further boost the sport’s popularity and development in the state.

The Hoopers have played in the Premier League since its inception and won the national championship five times, with titles in 2011, 2012, 2019, 2021 and 2023.

At the continental level, Rivers Hoopers has played in the FIBA Africa Club Champions Cup three times, and has played in the Basketball Africa League (BAL) twice, in the 2021 and 2024 seasons.
