A tragic series of events has struck Nonwa community in Tai Local Government Area, Rivers State, as two members of the same family, a 2 year old Mercy Prince Igwe and her 25 year old uncle, Bright Igwe were laid to rest after mysteriously dying on the same day.
The community on Wednesday, October 2024, was rocked by the allegation that 60 year old Monday Lenee, a local roadside fuel and engine oil retailer, was responsible for their deaths through fetish means.
Monday Lenee was accused of using traditional rituals to kill the young girl and her uncle. Under immense pressure from the community, he was dragged to a local juju priest to undergo a traditional trial.
The moment of judgment came in an eerie fashion when the priest’s broom was placed around Lenee’s neck, a common local practice used to confirm guilt. The brooms reportedly reacted, sealing his fate as guilty in the eyes of the community.
Lenee, who had been a well-known figure in the community, was killed shortly after the traditional trial.
The entire community is in mourning as questions linger over what could have led to such a devastating incident.
