Youths in Okrika Local Government Area of Rivers State have voiced their concerns over the alarming rate of unemployment plaguing the community.
In a conversation with Kristina Reports on Tuesday, August 13, 2024, one of them, who only identified himself as Ipalibo, expressed his frustration, stating that unemployment is on the rise, leaving youths with limited options, some of which lead them down unfavorable paths.

“What is the joy of graduating when my certificate cannot get me a good job? What is wrong with our refineries, why can’t they employ us? I have lost count of how many times I’ve applied for different positions, yet till now, no response. This is not fair at all. Let our refinery employ us,” he lamented.
During a telephone interview, Okwein, a young graduate, shared his decision to accept his fate and find alternative means of earning a living.
“As it is, there are only two jobs in Okrika—you are either a teacher or you are into cybercrime. Imagine a graduate of engineering teaching in a primary school. This thing is really heartbreaking but what can we do,” he said.
Similarly, Daniel, a resident of Ogoloma community, recounted his struggle since graduating from a higher institution, as job opportunities have been scarce.
“I worked as a POS attendant, later I got a security job at a bank, but the bank folded up. Currently, I’m teaching in a primary school with a meager salary. I have been very unhappy but I just live through with it,” he shared with Kristina Reports.
As the youths of Okrika LGA voice their frustrations, this serves as a call to the Federal Government to focus on revitalizing and ensuring the functionality of local refineries.
By doing so, these refineries could become a vital source of employment for the region’s youths.
