Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC) has been accused of having the highest oil spill record in Rivers State and thus the highest contributor to the pollution of its environment.
This was disclosed in a statistical report by the National Oil Spill Detection and Remediation Agency (NOSDRA) revealed that SPDC has the highest figures of report of oil spills in its host communities across the Rivers State.
Zonal Head of NOSDRA, Port Harcourt office, Cyrus Nkangwung while giving a statistical report of petrol and crude oil spills for the months of June and July, said the Agency recorded about 50 spills from pipelines owned by five oil and gas companies operating in the state in the past two months.
He explained that 42 of the recorded spills are as a result of sabotage from a third party while two are operational error.
Nkangwung said the agency was saddened about the cases of sabotage on the oil pipeline, an indication that oil facilities in the region were not safe.
The NOSDRA boss, however, said efforts of the joint military task force on the facilities reduced the horrible incidents of pipeline sabotage in the last month.
He said more awareness on the dangers of pipeline vandalism will further reduce the menace.
The NOSDRA boss further said the companies have commenced clean up process on the spill sites.
