In what was a nerve-wracking conclusion to the 2024 Super Six playoff, Edo Queens emerged victorious, claiming their maiden Nigeria Women Football League title, following a 1-1 draw against Bayelsa Queens at the Samson Siasia Stadium in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State on Sunday, May 26, 2024.

Moses Aduku’s side faced an edgy finale, relying on the outcome of the simultaneous match between Rivers Angels and Heartland Queens in Nembe. Surprisingly, both matches ended in 1-1 draws, sealing Edo Queens’ triumph.

The Benin outfit became champions after securing 10 points, Rivers Angels finished second and Bayelsa Queens third, due to goal difference, despite both teams being tied on nine points.

Rivers Angels narrowly missed out on their eighth title, while Bayelsa Queens fell short of claiming their sixth title to end in third after successes in 2004, 2006, 2007, 2018, and the 2021/2022 seasons.

Edo Queens’ historic win earns them a spot in the 2024 West Africa Zone B (WAFU-B) Women’s Champions League Qualifiers, with a chance to qualify for the prestigious CAF Women’s Champions League.

The Benin City-based team smiled to the bank with a 10 million naira cash prize, while Rivers Angels and Bayelsa Queens took home five million naira and three million naira, respectively.

FC Robo Queens’ Folashade Ijamilusi, who scored eight goals this season, won the season’s top goal scorer award ahead of Goodness Osigwe (Edo Queens) and Ojiyovwi Kesiena (Nasarawa Amazons), who both scored seven goals.

Rivers Angels’ Morufa Ademola was voted the goalkeeper of the season after her heroic efforts led the Jewels of Rivers to a second-place finish at the season-ending Super Six. The Fair Play award went to the hosts Bayelsa Queens, who finished third.
