Rivers United’s aspirations of reaching the CAF Confederation Cup semi-finals were kicked to the curbs following a 2-0 defeat to USM Alger in the second leg of their quarter-final clash on Sunday, April 7, 2024, in Algeria.
The Port Harcourt-based side held a 1-0 advantage from the first leg played in Nigeria but was ultimately outclassed by the reigning champions as they turned the deficit, securing a 2-1 aggregate victory.
The Nigeria side would hold on to the compensation sum of five hundred and fifty thousand dollars ($550,000) for finishing as quarter-finalists in the competition.
The winner takes Two million dollars, the runner-up one million dollars and the semifinalists seven hundred and fifty thousand dollars.
Rivers United will now turn their attention back to the Nigerian Premier Football League where they have six outstanding games and sit 17th from 23 games, having won eight, drawn seven and lost eight.
