There is no truth to the rumours making the rounds and even news reports that Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara has suspended the Port Harcourt Ring Road, the State Government has said.
A statement by the State Commissioner for Information and Communications, Joseph Johnson on Tuesday, October 31, 2023 in Port Harcourt, Rivers State said no such decision has been made.
“The attention of the Rivers State Government has been drawn to news being circulated that the flag-ship project of Gov. Siminalayi Fubara, GSSRS, the 50.15km Dual Carriage Ring Road has been suspended.
“We wish to inform Rivers people and the general public to disregard such information as false.
Johnson stated that the project aims at advancing the economy of the State, explaining that 77% of the contract sum has already been paid and the contractor already working to deliver the project on agreed schedule.
“The project is for the advancement of our state and the improvement of the economy of our dear State therefore nothing whatsoever can stop it at this stage. For the avoidance of doubt, 77% of the contract sum has been paid and the construction firm is making frantic efforts to complete the job within schedule.”
He charged stakeholders in the Media ecology to adhere to age old tenets of fact-checking and information verification before dumping information in the public space.
“Please let’s be guided as we ask information and news managers to always verify their stories before going to the public space.”
There were news reports (not from Kristina Reports) on Tuesday, October 31, 2023 that the Governor had cancelled owing to the recent fracas between him and his political godfather, Nyesom Wike, who is the FCT Minister.
The fracas manifested in the attempt by 23 members of the Rivers State House of Assembly led by the now impeached Speaker, Martins Amaewhule to impeach the Governor.
Protests broke out and spread rapidly across the State capital, Port Harcourt with angry youths expressing their disgust over the impeachment attempt. It took the proactive and frantic efforts of the Rivers State Police Command to bring the situation under control.
