D’Tigress of Nigeria has won a fourth consecutive Afrobasket Women’s Championship in a pulsating final against Senegal, winning 84 -74 at the BK Arena in Kigali, Rwanda on Saturday.

Coach Rena Wakama who hails from Okrika, Rivers State guided Nigeria to a four-peat and the sixth Afrobasket Women’s title as she became the first female Coach to win the competition.

Coach Rena Wakama was appointed by NBBF on Friday, 30 June, just about three weeks before the competition and was made to participate in the tournament with a newly assembled squad.

There was a national fright as regards how the team would fare in the competition and a possible lack of Chemistry but the D’Tigress had a strong showing for most part of the competition, winning the fourth title on the bounce.

Amy Okonkwo was named Most Valuable Player at the tournament and also named in the all-star five and deservedly so. She recorded 15.6 Points per game and 8.2 rebounds per game and played a vital role in Nigeria’s success dropping big numbers in all the games played.

Experience played a huge role in the D’Tigress’ victory as the old players in the mix; Amy Okonkwo, Murjanatu Musa, Sarah Ojoke, Okoro Ifunaya, Elizabeth Balogun, and Pallas Akpanah all stepped up to the plate when necessary.

Nigeria is now four of four in the head-to-head against Senegal

2005 Nigeria 64-57 Senegal
2017 Nigeria 65-48 Senegal
2019 Nigeria 60-55 Senegal
2023 Nigeria 84-74 Senegal

The victory makes Nigeria only the second country ever to win the women’s Afrobasket title four times consecutively, Senegal being the first.
