Heartland FC got a 2-0 victory against Kano Pillars at the Stephen Keshi Stadium on Friday, July 7, 2023 to become the 2022/23 Nigerian National League Champions.
Goals from Erikan Francis and Fabian Omaka helped Heartland FC get the better of Kano Pillars in the NNL Final.
The first half ended goalless despite a series of attempts, and it remained that way up until the 54th minute when Erikan Francis broke the deadlock. Erikan had an attempt at goal from range earlier on in the 33rd minute but it was saved by the Kano Pillars goalkeeper, but you know what they say: better luck next time.
The Naze Millionaires saw their lead double in the 76th minute courtesy of Fabian Omaka who was set up beautifully by substitute, Chidiebere Ajoku.
The Naze Millionaire’s defence held their own all through the game to prevent Pillars from getting any shot in.
The Naze Millionaires went unbeaten all through the season, getting eight wins and five draws. They played ten games in the NNL23 regular season, winning six and sharing the spoils four times, finishing first in Group B4.
They also played three matches in the Conference playoffs, where they won two games and drew one, ending up as winners of the Southern Conference.
It was indeed a fantastic season for Heartland FC, as they also gained promotion to the Nigerian Premier Football League after a one-year hiatus.
The 2022/23 NNL trophy can now be added to their collection of five NPFL trophies (1987, 1988, 1989, 1990, and 1993); three Federation Cups (1988, 2011, and 2012); and two Nigerian Super Cup titles in 2011 and 2012.
