A Federal High Court sitting in Port Harcourt has reserved judgement in the bail application brought before it by a member of the House of Representatives representing Port Harcourt Federal Constituency 2, Chinyere Igwe.

Igwe, who is who is standing trial for money laundering, was arrested by the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) on the night of Friday, February 24, 2023 for being in possession of about $480,000, without reporting to the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) as required by law.

Aside, the hard currency, a note was also found on him outlining how the money would be distributed among stakeholders of the Peoples Democratic Party in the Rivers State.

When the matter came up in court on Tuesday, March 14, 2023, principal prosecuting counsel from the Office of the Attorney General, Rivers State, Chidi Ekeh applied to take over the prosecution from the Police.

The counsel to the defendant, Reuben Wanoghor did not oppose the application but insisted on moving the motion for bail application.

Thereafter, the presiding judge, Justice Stephen Daylop-Pam ruled that the principal prosecutor from the Ministry of Justice takes over the case and reserved judgement on the bail application.

Justice Daylop-Pam also adjourned the case to Thursday, May 4, 2023 for the substantive case to commence and ordered that the defendant be remanded in Police custody.

Speaking to Journalists outside the court, Chidi Ekeh said the State applied to take over the prosecution of the matter from the Police which the application was granted.

Meanwhile, Defense Counsel, Reuben Wanoghor said they had filed motion for the bail of the defendant and the motion was adjourned for hearing, adding that they had no issues with the adjournment of the case.
