As the O.B. Lulu-Briggs Foundation establishes a professorial chair in Geriatrics Medicine in the Rivers State University (RSU), Nkpolu-Oroworukwo, Port Harcourt, Vice Chancellor of the university, Professor Blessing Didia has expressed concern over the abuse of endowment Chairs in Nigerian Universities.
Prof. Didia stated this when he received a delegation of the O.B. Lulu-Briggs Foundation in his office at the University.
The Vice Chancellor said endowment chairs the world over were established and sustained by their donors to assist the University to address critical issues of interest in Society.
Geriatrics Medicine is the branch of medicine or social science dealing with the health and care of old people.
The O.B. Lulu-Briggs Foundation is a not-for-profit organisation, founded in 2001 by Dr. Seinye Lulu-Briggs, in honour of her late husband, Chief Olu Benson Lulu-Briggs. It is focused on service to humanity through philanthropy.
Prof. Blessing Didia commended the O.B. Lulu-Briggs Foundation for their resolve to establish a chair in Geriatrics Medicine at the University and assured them of the cooperation of the University to realize the objective.
The Provost, College of Medical Sciences, Prof. Raphael Oruamabo, described the initiative to launch a chair in Geriatrics Medicine in the Rivers State University as a worthy cause to help and support the elderly in Society.
The leader of the delegation and daughter of late O.B. Lulu-Briggs, Solate Ovunda -Akarolo said the foundation has concluded arrangements to launch an endowment Chair in Geriatrics at the University this Wednesday as a part of the activities to commemorate her father’s 89th posthumous birthday event.
