The Independent National Electoral Commission INEC in Rivers State says it is now set for the commencement of the continuous voter registration (CVR) but this time with electronic interface, calling on stakeholders to join in voters mobilization.
INEC Resident Electoral Commissioner of Rivers State, Obo Effanga who came up with this update today during a press conference organized by the Commission in Port Harcourt, said the registration exercise was “mainly for people who recently attained voting age, those who may have misplaced their voters card, those whose cards have faded and would want to replace or those who wish to transfer their voting unit to another for one reason or the other.”
He said the continous voters registration will begin online on Monday 28th June, 2021in a yet to be disclosed website and people have the option of logging on to the site to inpute their bio-data and get to LGA designated centers afterwards for authentication and biometric capturing, explaining that fresh registrations can only be done physically, at the INEC Local Government Offices and the state headquarters, beginning from Monday July 19th, 2021.
Effanga stated that with the virtual improvement in the registration procedure, transfer of voting point, card reprint and corrections can now all be done individually online, although this according to him does not affect the physical process as two registration areas are being made available in the 23 LGAs to cater for the exercise which will run from 9am to 4pm from July 19, 2021.
The State INEC REC added that the continuous voters registration will last for a duration of one year, calling on the Commission’s stakeholders to join hands in bringing more voters on board.
“We call on political parties, traditional rulers, National Orientation Agency and the ministry of Information as well as Religious organisations to do more in voter education to guarantee a mass turnout during the exercise. It is in the interest of all Nigerians for this to be successful.”
Effanga further explained that as at 2019 there were 119974 poling units in Nigeria but with the addition of 56872 poling unit, the nation now has 176846 poling with 6866 in Rivers State, while 77 poling units were relocated for being inappropriately sited around Rivers State.
