A non-governmental organisation, Journalists and Friends Against Disasters and Accidents International has commended the Rivers State Government for taking steps to bring to justice persons allegedly implicated in the collapse of an ongoing 7-storey building in the GRA 2 axis of Port Harcourt last year.
This comes on the heels of statements credited to the State Governor, Nyesom Wike, that government has decided to look into the report of the committee set up to probe the immediate and remote causes of the 7-storey building collapse that claimed several lives.
In a statement by its founder, Ruskin Amadi, the NGO hailed the State Government’s position but maintained that government should not relent in ensuring that the recommendations of the committee though yet to be made public be implemented.
“It is unfortunate that greed and corruption have so taken over the psyche of the average Nigerian that we no longer care for human lives . We prefer making profits at the expense of fellow Nigerians even when that may lead to death.
Journalists and Friends Against Disasters and Accidents International also called on the government to take actions to sanitise the ministries involved in issuing papers in the built industry so as to prevent future occurrence of building collapse in the state.
The NGO noted that it was worrisome that such incidents have continued to happen in Nigeria because the federal, states and local governments have not been doing proper checks on existing buildings especially aged ones and new ones under construction.
