NNPC on Thursday, November 21, 2024, announced its partnership with stakeholders of sports in Nigeria to develop and commercialise the game of football in Nigeria and stated its intention to bring back value to the sport, reshape it, re-engineer it and bring happiness to Citizens.

Founded in 1977, NNPC has become the largest national oil company in Africa and a partnership with a company of such magnitude, the benefits will be enormous if done rightly. Below are four major things the partnership can accomplish:

1. Infrastructure Development: The state of sporting facilities in Nigeria is incredibly flawed and a major reason for it, is the lack of a good maintenance culture. The financial implications of the partnership with NNPC can help with stadium renovations and upgrade existing stadiums, which will in turn facilitate the country’s inclusion in hosting big football and non-footballing events and bring about economic development. The partnership can also facilitate the building of new training facilities, academies, and stadiums.

2. Focus on grassroots and Talent Development: NNPC can support initiatives that promote football development at the grassroots level, identifying and nurturing young talent.
As well as, bringing out funds to recruit quality coaching staff.

3. Commercialization: In addition to the financial implications of this partnership, the brand alone has the ability to attract additional sponsors, increasing revenue streams for Nigerian football. After all, a good name is better than silver or gold. The partnership can help secure better media rights deals, expanding the reach and visibility of Nigerian football, which has been one of the major bottlenecks in the leagues.

4. Collaboration with football governing bodies: Working closely with the National Sports Commission, Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), and other stakeholders to develop and implement strategies to develop and market Nigerian football.
