Traditional Institutions, Critical to Sourcing Solutions to National Challenges – ICAN

The role of traditional institutions in Nigeria in sourcing solutions to national challenges was highlighted at the weekend in Bonny Island, Rivers State, just as the call was made for an ongoing strategic partnership that would ensure their critical input in national development.

National President of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN), Onome Adewuyi, FCIB, FCA, came out with this position when she led a high-powered delegation of ICAN to pay a courtesy visit on the Amanyanabo and Natural Ruler of Bonny Kingdom, His Majesty, King Dr Edward Asimini William Dappa Pepple III, CON, Perekule XI, at the King Perekule Palace in Bonny on Saturday, May 15, 2021.

Adewuyi stated that a collaborative approach among relevant stakeholders both in the public and private sectors, and traditional rulers, in particular, would serve the country better uses than alienation or exclusion.

“At ICAN, we place a high premium on traditional institutions and continue to advocate among governments and other stakeholders that the solution to the challenges facing us as a nation require a collaborative approach among all relevant individuals and institutions in the country.”

“Indigenous knowledge should be leveraged in developing policies and programmes that would speak directly to the peculiarities of our situation.”

She informed the Bonny Monarch that she and her entourage were in Bonny Island for the inauguration of the ICAN Bonny Kingdom and District Society, which, according to her, was a significant milestone in the achievements of ICAN, as it becomes the 67th District Society to be established by the institute.

“It would interest Your Majesty that the inauguration of Bonny and District Society of ICAN would brign the total number of District Societies of ICAN to 67.

Adewuyi, who is the 56th President of ICAN, disclosed that “these Districts are spread across all the 36 States of the Federation as well as the Federal Capital Territory (FCT),” explaining that this was to “ensure that all segments of the country experience the value adding impact of the professional services provided by ICAN members”.    

Responding, the Amanyanabo and Natural Ruler of Bonny Kingdom, His Majesty, King Dr Edward Asimini William Dappa Pepple III, CON, Perekule XI thanked the ICAN President and her entourage for the honour done to the kingdom by the establishment of an ICAN District there, noting that this gesture would scale up the development profile of Bonny Kingdom.

Represented by the Chairman, Bonny Chiefs Council (BCC), Se-Alabo Dagogo Wilcox, the revered Monarch assured the ICAN President of his support and that of his Chiefs and the various institutions in Bonny Kingdom to ensure the success and sustenance of the ICAN Bonny Kingdom and District Society.

Earlier, while introducing the delegation to the Amanyanabo, Vice President of the Bonny Chamber of Commerce, Industry, Mines and Agriculture (BOCCIMA), Vincent Furo had informed the respected Traditional Ruler that the need to deepen the professional quotient of the community and upscale the number of accountants both indigenous and resident gave rise to the establishment of the new ICAN District.

Furo, who is a former President of the Port Harcourt Chamber of Commerce, Industry, Mines and Agriculture (PHCCIMA), explained to the King that BOCCIMA played critical roles by facilitating the processes and galvanizing the various stakeholders that ensured the inauguration of the ICAN Bonny Kingdom and District Society was actualized.  

In attendance during the visit were the Vice Chairman of the Bonny Chiefs Council (BCC), Se-Alabo Hanniel Jack-Wilson Pepple, Assistant Secretary, Se-Alabo Charles John-Jumbo, Public Relations Officer, Se-Alabo Golden Christy-Wilcox, and members, Se-Alabo Reginald Hart, Se-Alabo Godswill Benstowe, Se-Alabo Abusi Green, Se-Alabo Leslie Finecountry, and Se-Alabo Abel Attoni.

The ICAN President was accompanied on the visit by the Director General, Bonny Chamber of Commerce, Industry, Mines and Agriculture (BOCCIMA), Constance Nwokejiobi, member, ICAN Governing Council, Chief Davidson Alaribe, FCA, Chairman, ICAN Port Harcourt and District Society, Dr Prince Elendu, FCA, General Manager, Finance, Nigeria LNG, Olugbenga Oluwaniyi, FCA,  pioneer Chairman of ICAN Bonny Kingdom and District Society, Dr Samuel Ekong, and Secretary of ICAN Lagos and District Society, Alesta Wilcox, among several other dignitaries.
