Bonny Island in Rivers State, which is home to the gas liquefaction plant of the Nigeria Liquefied Natural Gas Limited (NLNG), Bonny Oil and Gas Terminal of the Shell Nigeria, and Bonny River Terminal of ExxonMobil is in total blackout for almost 24 hours now.
Knowledgeable sources revealed to Kristina Reports that the power outage that has lasted for over 15 hours is caused by the shutdown of Shell’s gas turbine which generates electricity to the island community.
Checks around town by Kristina Reports shows that several businesses, government offices and other institutions are not able to carry out any activity due to the power outage.
Efforts by Kristina Reports to reach officials of Shell Nigeria were yet unsuccessful as a team from Kristina Reports that visit the BOGT were not allowed access to the Terminal Manager or any other official on duty.
Calls to the Shell Nigeria’s General Manager, External Relations were not answered or returned as at the time of this report.
Checks with the Bonny Utility Company also did not yield any hopes of when the power outage will be resolved as none of the officials agreed to speak with Kristina Reports as they were not authorised to do so.
Concerned residents have continued to express dismay that an island that is hosting Nigeria’s premium economic assets has been subjected to such situation time after time.
